Botox®(Botulinum toxin type A) is a natural, purified protein that is exctracted from bacteria , it relaxes wrinkle-causing muscle creating a smoothed, rejuvenated and more youthful appearance.

Botox® is a registered brand name produced by Allergan and is the only botulinum toxin in the world approved by the US FDA for cosmetic treatment of frown lines. We only use this original Botox® from Allergan, USA.

Many facial wrinkles occur when we make repeated facial expressions. Botox® relaxes the tiny facial muscles that cause expression lines, leaving the overlying skin smooth and unwrinkled. Once the muscle is relaxed, you can’t contract it and continue to make the undesirable facial expression. Thus the lines gradually smooth out from disuse, and new creases are prevented from forming.

Botox® can be used on various areas of the face. It’s most common locations are the areas with muscle movement such as the glabella/frown lines (the area between your eyebrows), as well as crow’s feet and the forehead wrinkles. Experienced injectors may also treat fine vertical lines in the lip area (smokers lines) and around the corners of the mouth. Usually in these cases, an injection of Botox® would be accompanied by a dermal fillers. Other areas include “Bunny lines” on the sides of the nose, marionette lines, jaw lines, neck bands and then along side of the nose to treat the “gummy smile”.

It is also being used for minimizing wrinkles, for reviving eye muscles and eyelid spasms, for relieving excessive underarm sweating and more. Many people also have claimed that the application of Botox® is able to reduce their migraine.

Botox® is a very useful medicine, however bear in your mind that it is not a replacement for a facelift, browlift, or blepharoplasty.

The whole treatment should usually take no longer than 5 – 15 minutes. You do not require any anaesthetic or sedation, although your doctor may use ice before injecting. Then, using micro needles and disposable syringes, tiny amounts of Botox®, will be injected into several points in the agreed area.

Most patients find that Botox® injections cause little discomfort. Many compare the feeling to a little insect bite. After injection, it takes 3-4 days for Botox® to begin taking effect and up to two weeks to see the full effect.

Most people resume normal activities immediately. Any tiny bumps or marks will go away within a few hours after your Botox® treatment. Below is several things to be considered:

  • Gently exercise the muscle areas that you have recieved the Botox® treatment by facial expressions: frowning, smiling, gently raising the eyebrows and squinting. It will assist the injection to spread in the relevant muscle.
  • Do not have a facial, nor rub or massage the treated areas for 24 hours after treatment
  • Do not lie down or do strenuous activities such as bending over, tying shoe lace, bowling etc for 3 hours after treatment, as the Botox® might migrate to the elevating muscle of your upper eyelid causing a lid drop.
  • Avoid any exposure to a sauna, hot tub or tanning for 4 hours.
  • Do not take aspirin, ibuprofen or other anti-inflammatories within the first 24 hours as this may increase bruising

Botox® has been shown to be generally well tolerated. The potential for unintented effects are injection-related such as localized pain, bruising, infection, redness, swelling, inflammation and bleeding. Rare are side-effects related to Botox® which include temporary drooping of the eyelids and nausea.Pregnant or breastfeeding women should not be treated with Botox®. If the targeted area is inflamed or infected, treatment may be rescheduled. If you are currently trying for a baby, it might be wise to delay any cosmetic treatment. Patients who have any diseases that affect muscle activity, may not be suitable for botulinum toxin.

Botox® normally will last for up to four months, depending on the individual. You can decide to repeat the procedure as you wish. The result will wear off gradually and expression lines slowly return. To maintain the effect you will require repeat injections 2-3 times a year. Studies show that with repeat Botox® treatment, the effect can last longer, so you may require less frequent treatment in the future to maintain the result you have come to like.
